This week the Rockmart Farmers Market (RFM) will host Sarah Berney with Wholesome Wave Georgia (WWG) in the Community Booth. RFM's partnership with WWG helps the market to accept and double SNAP benefits, SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. WWG's doubling program helps local communities in several important ways.
First, doubling SNAP ensures that everyone in our community has access to locally produced healthy food. Food insecurity and lack of access to fresh fruits and vegetables are current problems in many areas in Georgia, including Polk County and this program helps address these two issues.
Secondly, the doubling program is available to producer only markets so it also ensures SNAP dollars coming into our community truly benefit your local farmers and the local economy.
Funding for this program comes from many sources including Wholesome Wave nationally and private donations, but also partner market contributions. Yes, your humble local market helps make it happen by contributing up to forty percent of the amount doubled. RFM will be hosting several events and fundraisers during season 2015. The funds we raise help support our mission related programs as well as the doubling program.
